I enjoyed drawing Otoneil because not only was the lighting good, but the clothing he selected for his photo shoot really worked will with the lighting. I also took a couple of artistic liberties, like making his hat an illuminated light color when, in reality, it was black.
Otoneil also had on these wonderful orangish-ostrich skin boots with matching belt and a wide, metallic gold watch that really allowed the light to bounce!
The picture screamed neighborhood pride and personal self confidence. I also made an artistic decision to leave out the cell phone clipped to that handsome, wide ostrich belt.....just too distraction in composition AND reflected light.
Otoneil is also a Pilsen neighborhood member. Although all of the people photographed from this neighborhood are not Latino, many are. Since I do not know the Chicago communities or neighborhoods, it is interesting that the photographers have worked to capture themes and patterns that speak the voice of each!
