Meet Fred - Using a Different Pencil!

As promised, this is the sketch of Fred.  At first glance, the sketch looks much like the others done with graphite pencil and white China marker.

If you take a closer look, however, you will notice that Fred darkest details are not gray, but dark brown.

I really didn't think much about it at first, either, but when revisiting this sketch, I particularly likes the warmth of the darks and the depth of the contrasts where the brown and the white share an edge.  The pencil I used for this is actually called brown graphite, although it has the look and workability of the China marker.  It feels smoother and glides more easily on the rough texture of this tan, toned paper and the "tooth" of the paper seems to hold the brown graphite in a better way than it hold "traditional" graphite.

I really want to revisit the use of this pencil, again.

This is also an example of the range of seasons revealed through the variety of neighborhood pictures in this collection.  This is the first image in which one of the participants has been wearing gloves, but clearly this is NOT a mid-summer shot!
