Monarchy

A couple of years ago we removed tall, out of control shrubs from a spot in front of the house and replaced them with a small tranquility garden.  We included tall and short Shasta daisies, Veronica and three hosta plants. We also began with two groupings of calla lillies. In the center of it all is a water fountain.

I thought the area would attract butterflies and bees.  Every afternoon there is at least one, and sometimes two tiger swallowtail butterflies that make the rounds, first to the daisies, then through the apple tree, and into the maple tree.   I was sure that it was just a matter of time before a Monarch or a Viceroy would come to visit, as well.

It has been several prints, and a little research later, that I have realized that the Monarchs will only be visiting the back yard where we have planted a small stand of milk weed plants.  The original block that I carved with the Monarch butterfly includes a milkweed flower right on the block.

This is an image right from our back yard.  The variations, that include the butterfly in a bright, printed paper, and one with the butterfly landing on a fall dandelion (see Nov. 8), all make use of the original block PLUS something else.  Be sure to check tomorrow and Sunday for the variations!
